가 을을 시기하는 폭염이 심술을 부리던 날이었다. 소설과 그림 전시회, 단편영화 감독에 작곡 음반까지 발표해 부러움과 질투를 동시에 받고 있는 '멀티 엔터테이너' 구혜선 씨(25)와 한국인 감성을 사로잡은 일본 뉴에이지 피아니스트 이사오 사사키(56)가 만났다.
It was day of summer's scorching heat that envies the autumn. Novelist, artist, short film director, and now a musician with her own CD! She (25 in Korea and 24 in USA) is a "multi-entertainer" who gets bombarded with both envy and admiration at the same time. Isao Sasaki is a Japanese, New Age pianist master who totally captured and aroused the Korean listening hearts. I met with both of them.31 세 나이 차이에 말도 안 통하는 두 사람이 만난 이유는 순전히 음악 때문. 사사키가 구씨 작품 '별별이별'과 '골목을 돌면'을 연주했다. 이 선율은 구씨 작곡 소품집 '숨'(YG엔터테인먼트)에 수록됐다. '별별이별'은 사사키의 한국 동요 앨범 '더 웨이 위 워'(스톰프뮤직)에도 담겼다.
There is an age difference of 31 years between them and they don't even speak the same language. Yet they met purely because of music. Sasaki performs his arrangement of Koo's compositions, '별별이별'과 '골목을 돌면' (Different Good-bye and Turing the Alley). These melodies are collected in Goo's new music album, (by YG Entertainment). "Different Good-bye" is also enclosed in Isao Sasaki's NEW Korean childhood-theme Music Album, (by Stomp Music).지 난 8일 흰색 옷을 맞춰 입고 서울 충무로 매일경제신문사에 들어온 두 사람 눈빛은 맑았다. 하이힐 탓인지 TV에서 본 것보다 키(163㎝)가 더 크게 느껴지는 구씨는 겸손한 미소를 띠었다. 사사키 씨는 탁자에 이마가 닳을 정도로 90도로 인사했다.
This past September 8th, dressed in white, GHS and Isao Sasaki came to Seoul ChoongMooRoh Daily Economy News Office. Both of their eyes were clear and bright. Maybe it was her high hills, but GHS (163cm) appeared taller than on TV. She smiled politely. Sasaki-ssi humbly bowed to greet at nearly 90 degrees to the point of touching the table top. (Both are definitely polite, well-mannered and humble even with their amazing backgrounds!)자리에 앉자마자 두 사람 인연이 어떻게 시작됐을까 그 답부터 찾았다. 혈액형 A형이라는 것 외에 공통점을 찾기 힘든 이들은 두 달 전 처음 만났다. 구씨가 감독한 단편영화 '유쾌한 도우미' 배경음악으로 사사키의 '스카이 워커'를 넣고 싶어 먼저 연락했다. 선뜻 승낙하는 그에게 용기를 얻어 구씨는 자신이 습작한 작품들을 보냈다
As soon as they sat down, I wanted to know how they came to connect with each other. It was hard to believe that they would share anything in common besides the fact that they are of same blood-type A. They met face to face for the first time two months ago. However, Goo initially contacted Sasaki to get his permission to use his music, "SKY WALKER" for her short film, . Goo felt encouraged by Sasaki's quick permission that she also sent him her own musical compostions for his review.일본에서 이 곡들을 받은 사사키는 "아마추어치고는 훌륭했고 악상도 독특했다"며 "구씨를 만나 이야기를 나누면서 그의 음악세계와 볼펜으로 그린 몽환적인 꽃 일러스트들이 이해가 갔다"고 말했다.
When he first received Goo's demo tapes, Sasaki thought: "for an amateur, her music is remarkable and the melodies are unique." "After I met with Goo and we talked together, I began to understand her world of music and her ball-pen drawn illustration such as the dream-like flower". (GHS' favorite of all her illustrations as it symbolizes blooming of dreams, as she stated in one of her vid. clips with 2NE1 during her art exhibition days.)지난 4일과 8일 그와 나란히 피아노에 앉아 연탄곡을 친 구씨는 "내 건반 터치가 미흡해도 잘 맞춰주셨다"며 "서로를 너무 배려해 지금까지 한 번도 부딪힌 적 없었다. 선생님 음악은 희망차서 좋다"고 설명했다.
Both on September 4th and 8th, Goo and Sasaki played duet on the piano. Goo:"He overlooks and rather enhances my inadquate piano keyboard skill." "We are deeply considerate of each other that we have not had any conflicts at all. I have always loved his hope-filled music." (here, Goo addresses Sasaki as her teacher/mentor=선생님.) (Finally, we now only find out that there was a free MASTER MUSIC Class and mini-concert by Sasaki and Goo on the 8th of September---funny, there was no news report in the net.)첫인상은 어땠을가? 구씨는 "사사키 선생님은 교수님 이미지"라며 "한국 사람처럼 편하게 느껴졌다"고 기억했다.
Goo's first impression of Sasaki? "Mentor Sasaki initially gave me an impression of looking like a professor, and I felt as comfortable with him as if he is a Korean person."내년에 한국 활동 10주년을 맞는 사사키는 "비행기에 타면 스튜어디스가 한국어로 말을 건다"며 "한국인 같다는 말을 많이 듣는다"고 웃었다.
Next year, Sasaki celebrates his 10 years of activity in Korea. He laughs and comments that "flight attendants often mistake me as a Korean and even address me in Korean. I often hear that I very much look like a Korean."두 사람 음악 우정은 당분간 계속될 예정이다. 구씨는 다음달 사사키 전국투어 '위드 유'(10월 11일 서울 예술의전당~18일 부산문화회관)에 동행해 피아노 연탄곡 등 2~3곡을 직접 연주할 계획. 사사키는 음반 수록곡인 한국 동요 '반달' '오빠생각' '과수원길' 등을 들려준다.
These two people's musical friendship will continue for now. Next month, Goo will accompany Sasaki in his national tour of Korea, titled, . (October 11th at Seoul Art Palace to October 18th BUsan Cultural Center). She plans to personally perform 2~3 songs. Sasaki will perform from his new music CD, his arrangement of Korean childhood musical melodies such as '반달' '오빠생각' '과수원길' ="Half Moon, Thinking of My Brother, Fruit Garden Path". 서 정적인 치유 음악으로 유명한 사사키 연주는 1998년 한국 어느 카페에서 처음 흘러나왔다. 연인과 그 음악을 즐겨 듣던 사람이 이 곡 연주자를 찾아 헤맨 끝에 사사키라는 존재를 발견했고 정식 음반이 판매됐다. 카페 주인은 제목도 모른 채 그의 음악을 틀었다고 한다.
Sasaki's music, known for its emotionally healing qualities, was first heard in 1998 at a cafe in Korea. A woman who remembers enjoying listening to Sasaki's music with her lover desperately searched all radio stations in Korean for the musician's identity. When Sasaki's identity was revealed, official sale of his music CD's started. Cafe owner did not even know Sasaki's name while listening to his music.사사키는 "한국에서 받은 사랑을 동요로 되돌려주고 싶다. 한국 동요 감성이 일본과 비슷하다"며 "1998년 불황으로 음악을 그만두려 할 때 한국 음반사에서 활동 제의가 와서 다시 피아노 앞에 앉게 됐다"고 회상했다.
Sasaki: "I want to return the love that Koreans have shown me with the childhood music melodies. Korean childhood music is very similar to Japanese. Sasaki recollects: "In 1998, I almost gave up my music due to poor economy. then, a Korean music production company called and made a proposal that kept me playing my piano."[/color[color="#FF0000"]](WOW. a great example of distress that turned into a blessing!) (Also,Goo's chopstick fusion music must have been influenced by Sasaki's musical arrangement style of turning simple and familiar melodies into more unique and sophisticated new style of melody.)한 국에 깊은 애정을 갖고 있는 그는 2001년 일본 취객을 구하다 사고를 당한 고 이수현 씨를 위한 추모곡 '아이즈 포 유'을 헌정하기도 했다. 사사키는 "음악을 통해 한ㆍ일 교류를 계속하고 싶다"며 "이번 음악회에서 한복이라도 입을까 생각 중"이라고 웃었다.
Because of his deep affection for Korea, Sasaki dedicated his "EYES FOR YOU" to Lee Soo Hyun who was met with a tragic accident in Japan while trying to save a drunken person in 2001. Sasaki wishes to continue the work of "musical exchange between Korea and Japan". He laughs and says that he is even "thinking about wearing Korean traditional costume for the next upcoming concert." (That sounds like a wonderful idea,especially if GHS also wears the traditional Japanese costume for the concert!!)이번에 피아노 연주 실력까지 보여준 구씨에게도 또 한 번 놀랐다. 신은 너무 불공평한 것 아닌가. 그는 "그림과 음악, 소설 모두 영화 제작 과정"이라고 했다.
I am again surprised by Goo's yet another talent, this time in her musical ability. GOD really does not play fair. Goo says that her music and art and novel are all for one thing, to make a movie.최근 첼리스트가 등장하는 미스터리 음악 영화 '구술'(가제) 제작을 추진하고 있다.
Recently, Goo is promoting for the production of her movie tentatively called , which is a mystery music movie.구씨는 "원래 촬영한 다음에 음악을 정하는데 나는 다른 방향으로 풀고 싶었다"며 "대중과 먼저 친해진 음악을 담고 싶었다"고 설명했다.
Goo explains: "Usually OST music comes after the completion of a movie. But I wanted to go a different direction. I wanted to incorporate into my movie the music that the audience was already familar with."그에게는 요즘 '구오나르도'라는 새로운 별명이 생겼다. 다재다능한 천재 예술가 레오나르도 다빈치를 빗댄 것. 구씨의 넘치는 재능을 약간 비꼬는 느낌도 있다.
These days, people are newly nicknaming Goo as "Goo-O-nardo", which is a twisted, combined names of Goo and the multi-talented genius master artist, Leonardo DaVinci. Unfortunately, the nickname also seems to slightly put down Goo's overflowing multi-talents." '얼짱'으로 연기를 시작할 때도 '낙하산 연기자'로 보더군요. 저를 부정적으로 생각한다면 열심히 노력해서 인정 받아야죠. 그래도 저를 보고 긍정적 자극을 받는 사람들도 있어 다행이에요. 피아노를 그만두려 했다가 제 연주를 듣고 다시 시작했다는 분도 있어요."
"When I started acting after being labeled 'ulzzang', people use to sarcastically comment that I was a 'parachute actress'. (i.e. she only got her opportunity to act due to the fame of being picked an ulzzang.) If people think less of me, of course, I will attempt to get recognition by making bigger effort. However, it is so fortunate that there are also people who become positively influenced by me. One person almost thought of quitting piano but changed his/her mind after listening to me perform."노력으로 대중의 의심을 지우며 살아온 그는 열정이 들끓는 청춘이다. 자기 한계를 긋지 않고 끊임없이 도전하기 때문. 최근에는 기타와 바이올린을 배우고 있다.
Goo is a overflowingly passionate young woman who has been trying to live her life by her efforts in order to overcome and erase public's suspicion and doubts. She never draws any lines of limitation around her. If she wants it, she challenges herself to do it. Recently, she is learnig to play guitar and violin. "그렇다고 절대 막무가내는 아니에요. 수없이 실패한 끝에 얻은 기회에요. 학생 때부터 직접 쓴 시나리오를 들고 영화사들을 찾아다녔지만 매번 거절당했어요. 시행착오를 겪으면서 '왜 나는 안될까' 고민하면서 정답을 찾았어요."
"However, I am not recklessly stubborn. That is not it. This is an opportunity earned after so many failures. I took my scripts to many production companies and was rejected countless times. Having had so many trials and errors, I used to say to myself, "how come good fortune does not happen for me!". But I found my answers in midst of distress." (I just love how she says it. she basically never gives up on what she loves no matter what!)슬픈 일이 있으면 그림을 그리거나 글을 쓰고 작곡을 하면서 위로를 받는다는 구씨. 사람 마음을 끌어당기는 힘을 갖고 있었다. 상처를 달래주는 사사키 음악도 마찬가지였다.
Goo would draw, write, or compose when she felt sad and gave to herself comfort and encouragement that she needed to move forward. She really has the power to draw people's heart towards her. Sasaki's healing music also does the same.

Goo: "If it was just me, not too many people would have come to the concert."

어깨를 나란히 하고 앉은 두 사람은 연신 싱글벙글이다. 피아니스트와 배우. 같이 자리할 이유가 없을 법한 두 사람이지만 이들은 이미 지난 주에 함께 콘서트를 열었으며, 오는 10월부터 전국 투어 연주회도 앞두고 있다.
Both are all smiles. A pianist and an actress--most of us would not have imagined such a working relationship to materialize. But they just had their concert together on the 9/5th and they will continue their work through a musical tour starting October.
“1200석 극장이 가득 찼어요. 두 곡을 같이 연주했는데, 잘 리드에 주셔서 정말 많은 도움 받았죠.”(구혜선)

지 난 5일 '구혜선&이사오 사사키 음반 제작발표 기념 작은음악회'를 통해 호흡을 맞춘 이 둘은 동시에 새 앨범을 낸 뮤지션이기도 하다. 이사오 사사키의 신보는 반가움이지만, 배우이자 직접 그린 일러스트레이트 삽화가 실린 픽션집 ‘탱고’를 펴 내고 삽화 전시회를 열었으며 단편영화 감독으로도 데뷔한 구혜선의 음반에는 놀라움이 더해진다. 전방위 활동으로 최근 ‘구오나르도 다빈치’라는 별명을 얻기까지 한 구혜선은 그런 수식어가 “아직 너무 벅차다”며 곤란한 웃음이다.
Praises of their accomplishments. Goo feels burdened by people calling her Goo-Onardo.
“ 곧 크랭크 인 할 영화에 들어갈 음악과 그림을 미리 선보인 거라서, 영화를 보시면 ‘아, 저기서 나오는 음악이었구나’ 하실 거에요. 그래도 전 연기자니까 연기가 가장 먼저이고, 다른 활동들이 연기에도 도움이 되는, 한 분야라고 생각해요. 종합적으로 무얼 보여드릴 수 있고, 제가 또 그런 쪽에 관심이 있고, 사람들과 공유할 수 있는 거라고 생각하기 때문에 자연스럽게 하게 되는 것 같아요.” Goo's explanation of all her work for one purpose.
특히 ‘별별이별’과 ‘골목을 돌면’ 등 그녀가 작곡한 곡을 이사오 사사키와 함께 녹음해 서로의 음반에 실린 것도 이색적이다.
“피아노는 연습을 굉장히 많이 해야 하는데, 구혜선씨가 시간이 별로 없으셔서(웃음). 연습시간이 많으시다면 충분히 더 잘 하실 거라고 생각해요.”(이사오 사사키) Their collaboration of two songs by Goo. Sasaki:"I feel that if she is able to afford the time to practice more, she would be even better." Goo smiles.
지난 해 ‘Prologue’에 이어 1년 만에 만나보는 이사오 사사키의 새 앨범에는 ‘별’, ‘오빠생각’, ‘과수원길’ 등 한국인들에게 정겨운 동요들이 또 다른 편곡으로 탄생해 있다.
“평소 제 앨범의 색과는 다른 느낌이 들 거에요. 한국의 많은 분들이 알고 있는 곡을 모았어요. 주변 분들이 많이 추천해 주시기도 했고요. 10년 동안 성원해 주신 분들에 대한 감사의 마음을 담은 앨범이라고 할 수 있습니다.” Sasaki's explanation of his current album which he dedicates to Korean who have shown him so much support over 10 years.
그의 대표곡인 ‘Sky Walker’와 ‘A letter of song’ 등을 비롯, 새 앨범에 수록된 곡으로 짜여진 프로그램으로 오는 10월 11일 서울을 시작으로 고양, 성남, 대구, 부산으로 이사오 사사키 투어 콘서트 ‘With You’를 이어갈 예정이다. 특별 게스트인 구혜선과의 합주도 이 모든 무대에서 만날 수 있다. Sasaki's music tour called "WITH YOU" will visit 5 cities starting 10/11/09, with GHS.
“항상 관객의 입장에서 콘서트를 보는 입장이었는데, 사사키 씨 덕분에 예술의전당에도 서 보고(웃음). 연기자로서는 그 무대에 서 볼 일이 사실 없잖아요. 굉장히 영광이고 또 연습도 정말 많이 해야 할 것 같아요.”
Goo: "As an actres, I probably would never have the chance to perform in such grand art centers. Thanks to Sasaki-ssi, I have become a performer rather than the usual audience in such places. It is a big honor for me and I must practice really really hard."
