탤런트 구혜선(26)은 영화 이야기를 할 때와 연애 이야기를 할 때가 영 딴판이었다.
The Reporter Song notices the difference in GHS's attititude and demeanor when she talks about her work as opposed to her talk about her relationship with men.

최 근까지 영화감독에 소설가, 화가까지 변신에 변신을 거듭해온 그녀다. 오는 9월엔 그동안 그녀가 작곡했던 노래를 일본 뉴에이지 피아니스트 이사오 사사키가 편곡해 음반으로도 낸다. 9월 5일엔 '오버 더 레인보우'란 제목으로 연주회도 열 예정. 구혜선은 정식으로 작곡이나 그림을 배운 적은 없다고 했다. 재능이 대체 몇 가지인 걸까.
(summary of GHS and multi-talents and the upcoming September concert...We all know these facts already.) She was confident and eloquent as she talked about her love for her work. The reporter also asks how many other things is GHS good at.

“아니에요, 제가 관심 있는 몇 가지엔 정말 공을 들여서 열심히 하는데 다른 건 전혀 못해요. 완전 바보에요.” 지난 13일 강남 청담동 한 카페. 영화 이야기할 때만 해도 또박또박 눈을 빛내며 조리 있게 말을 이어가던 구혜선이 갑자기 귀여운 푸념을 늘어놓기 시작했다.

"No, No, With few things that I am really interested in, I put in all my effort. But, I cannot do other things well at all. A complete simpleton!" I sat with GHS last August 13th at a Kang Nam Chun Dam Dong cafe. While she discussed her movie, her speech was eloquent and precise while her eyes shone. All of a sudden, GHS turned all cute while grumbling about another aspect of her life.

“ 연예인이면 좀 제대로 꾸밀 줄도 알고, 쿨한 척도 좀 할 줄 알고 그래야 하잖아요. 근데 전 네일이나 페디큐어 받는 것조차 제대로 못해요. 손톱 항상 물어뜯고, 제대로 씻지도 않고 있고. 남자들이 절 멀리서 볼 땐 ‘와 쟤 되게 열정적이고 귀엽다’라고 생각하고 접근했다가 막상 사귀면 ‘얘 뭐야 엄청 깬다’ 그러고 도망가요.”

"Most people in the business of acting and performing know at least how to dress and groom well and at times, even act cool and indifferent. However, I am not like that. I rarely get manicures. I always bite my nails. Sometimes I haven't even cleaned myself appropriately. From far, men may look at me and think how passionate and cute I am and approach me. Then, they see the real me from dating and become disappointed and run away from me."

구혜선은 스스로 “연애엔 정말 젬병인 사람”이라고 고백하기도 했다. “연애하면서 대체 어떻게 밀고 당기기를 해야 하는 건지 모르겠어요. 전 그냥 좋아하는 사람 생기면 그야말로 도시락 싸 들고 쫓아다니는 성격이거든요. 문자 보내놓고 계속 전화기 손에서 쥐고 있다가 답 안 오면 냉큼 또 보내고 그래요. 그래서 결국 남자들이 절 재미없다고 생각하고 떠나간다니까요.”

GHS independently confessed that she is a hopeless case when it comes to dating. "While dating, I have no idea what it means to push and pull or play the love games. When I really like someone that I am dating, i am the type that pack lunches and follow him around. I send him text message and wait for his call with the cell phone readily at my side. If he does not return my text, I do not hesitate to send another one right away. Ultimately, men think me boring and leave me."

가장 최근에 했던 연애는 1년 반 전. 친구들이 하나 같이 ‘대체 저런 애가 왜 좋아?’라고 물었던 스타일의 남자에게 한 눈에 반해 사귀게 됐었다고 했다. 사람을 만날 땐 언제나 결혼을 전제로 만난다고. 그래서 남자친구를 사귀는 게 쉽지 않다고 했다.

"My last dating experience was one and half years ago. I dated a guy that I fell head over heels at first sight. Most my friends could not see what I saw in him. I do not date for the sake of dating but for the possibility of marriage. That is why dating is not an easy thing for me."

“최근까지 만난 친구도 처음엔 그 쪽에서 먼저 다가왔는데, 막상 연애과정에서 제가 하염없이 혼자 기다리고 쫓아다니다가 차였어요. 다음 연애는 정말 잘하고 싶은데, 잘 될까요? 결혼하면 이런 고민 안 하게 되겠죠?” (웃음)

"My last relationship was also initiated by the man. However, while we were actually dating, I was the one usually waiting alone and chasing after him. Then. he dumped me. I really want to do well in my next relationship. Do you think it will? If I get married, I wouldn't have to stress over such things, right??"

Lee Min Ho's Interview for the Secret Campus DVD in Japan

LMH's interview for the Secret Campus DVD in Japan which was filmed in Taiwan in June.

Part 1

Q : You debuted with the 'Secret Campus', and how did it feel?
LMH : At my acting debut, I think I was very nervous, totally lost and just busy speaking my lines without any time to breathe. My memory isn't clear on the details, but I think I was so nervous that the shooting was done without my knowing how I was shot.

Q : What was your hardest and enjoyable parts of the shooting?
LMH : The drama had many soccer-playing scenes. So I enjoyed my shooting the most because I like soccer and I'm confident of playing parts like that. As for the difficult parts, it seems that every moment was hard. Once I broke my forefinger while performing a fighting scene with my fist colliding with the other's, and I still remember that. That's why I appear all of a sudden wearing a cast in the later part of the drama, though it wasn't included in the story.

Q : I wonder what you were actually like in high school like the background of 'Secret Campus'?
LMH : I also seem to have had not a little rebellion. For example, I don't think that I liked listening to others. But I think I grew up faster, because I didn't make any big trouble when I was in the second and third year of high school. It seems I spent my adolescence very quietly.

Q : Which subject were you good at and poor at when you were in high school(senior high)?
LMH : I was good at PE(physical education) and poor at math.

Q : In high school, did you have anyone in mind like whom you did or didn't want to be a person in your future?
LMH : It seems that I didn't want to be the type of adult who talked big or showed off some success of them, but I just wanted to be a quiet and naively honest adult.

Q : You played the role of a student with a dream of being a soccer player. How well did you play soccer?
LMH : When I was in elementary school, there were eleven classes in all. I made the entry list after having selected better soccer players in each class, and they just came along with me without complaining. Whatever I said, there was no one to grumble about me.

Q : Was it because you played soccer well or you were good in fights?
LMH : Maybe because they recognized me as a good soccer player. I've bragged about myself for no reason (feels embarrassed). But I can't play soccer well now.

Q : Then, were you the best soccer player among all students in your elementary school?
LMH : Yes, it seemed that I was really good at playing soccer at that time.

Q : The following question your fans are interested in genuinely....Have you ever dated with anyone when you were in high school? If yes, what kind of date have you had?
LMH : Yes, I have dated with someone during high school. Dare I say how I did, we usually went to the movies. As being high school students, many places were not allowed to go so watching movies were what we did most while dating.

Q : wholesomely?
LMH : Yes, what we did were wholesome.

Q : In the drama, Du-hyeon had something confidential, but I wonder if you have a secret of your own..if you had some secret which you didn't want to tell to others.
LMH : I don't think I had any secret. It seems I'm not the style of having a lot of secrets.

Q : Are you the type of person who tells their friends anything?
LMH : I don't tell everything to my friends, but because I didn't have any particular things I did secretly, it's hard to remember what secret I had from my friends at that time.

Q : You are saying that you didn't really have any secrets, but you don't relatively tell important things to others?
LMH : No, I don't. I don't try to hide them, but I'd rather not tell others about me very often.

Q : Now we'll ask you something personal. Maybe your fans like it better.. Are there any hobbies you often enjoy personally?
LMH : I usually tend to enjoy playing online games. Because I can't go out a lot lately, I mainly enjoy computer games, which I have liked since high school.

Q : Aren't there many kinds of games available like sports and RPG games?
LMH : I prefer RPG, because computer games cause me to desire to win, and I hate to lose. Besides, there are rankings and positions in online games, and once I begin to play an online game, I can't help playing long (to raise my level). Now, I'm trying not to play online games deliberately.

Q : It's possible, I know....
LMH : (laughing) It could be called 'addiction', which seems to make me more competitive; at least, make me not want to lose. When I began playing with someone once, I got a bit tired with the gap getting wider against me.

Q : It's not limited to only games, but applies to everything, right?
LMH : Right. Maybe because I played sports in childhood, but I'm relatively competitive in everything.

Q : Do you have any special talent besides soccer and computer games?
LMH : I'm so sociable that I become close to people pretty fast. I'm not really free from being shy, but I think I'm more sociable than ordinary people. Is it sort of special talent, too?

Q : You bet.

Part 2

Q This interview is for Japanese fans and are there Japanese words to learn for them nowadays?
LMH : Do-jo Yo-ro-si-ku Oh-ne-ga-yi-si-mas (I expect your favor)

I can memorize simple idioms as I speak them.

Q : Which country would you like to go among those countries you have never been before?
LMH : Venezia

Q : In Italy?
LMH : I have heard that Venezia is sinking. Is it true?

Q : I have heard it before ,too.
LMH : Before Venezia sinks, I'd like to go. I also want to go to Las Vegas.

Q : Haven't you been Italy?
LMH : No, I haven't.

Q : Which food do you frequently eat recently?
LMH : I frequently eat bean-paste pot stew and kimchi pot stew. For health reason, I also eat beef.

Q : Do you like meat?
LMH : When I eat at home, I always eat more than one kind of meat.

Q : Do you know how to cook?
LMH : I can cook several kinds of food.

Q : What are they?
LMH : I am good at cooking kimchi pot stew, ramyeon(Korean noodle), fried egg rice and fried Kimchi rice ^^

Q : If your girlfriend come to your place, what food can you confidently make for her?
LMH : I'm confident of cooking ramyeon (laughs a lot), because chances are I won't fail. I can succeed 100 %. If I cook a big dish, it will be fried rice.

Q : This time, what is the dish you want your girlfriend to fix for you?
LMH : Just a few side dishes and rice...like those my mother makes.

Q : Then, you mean just a warm meal rather than a luxurious meal?
LMH : Yes. It's okay if it's not delicious, but it'll be better if it is.

Q : Won't it more difficult to make side dishes?
LMH : Yes, I think so. (laughs a lot)

Q : These days you might well find no time to rest enough, yet how do you spend your holiday?
LMH : I often hang out with my close people and friends, just chatting and having meals together, or I watch rental DVD movies, or play online games.

Q : What's the first thing you do in the morning?
LMH : I go to the bathroom still half asleep and brush my teeth. While I begin brushing with my eyes half open, I wake up.

Q : Reversely, what are the things you do before you go to sleep.
LMH : I turn on TV or my computer, and listening to music from the computer.. or watching a program on TV, I fall asleep.

Q : You mean you fall asleep with TV or the computer on?
LMH : Yes. I hate all the time until falling asleep except that I'm so tired as to get to sleep. Because I come to think too much, I like going to sleep using TV or the computer so that I don't have my head in the clouds.

Q : Do you remember what you dreamt recently?
LMH : It's been like a long time since I dreamt something. It seems that I haven't dreamt any dream ever since BOF was started.

Aha! I did..(as if something came to his mind) One time when I was sleeping in my car, I dreamt of a fire starting. As soon as I woke up, I started beating my coordinator, shouting to her, "Put it out!". And what's more, at another time, I ate Kimchi pot stew in my dream, and then upon waking up, said to someone next to me, "Give me some water. It's too salty."^^

Q : Your dreams felt like reality ?
LMH : Yes, they were very much like reality.

Q : Do you wear pajamas while sleeping?
LMH : I sleep in short pants or pajamas. When I am alone in my house, I often sleep only in underwear. But I prefer wearing short pants and a short T-shirt when my mom and sister stay with me at home.

Q : This is a difficult question.. I wonder when you feel lonely, or listless and a little down, what you do, for example, take exercise on purpose or talk with your friends on the phone..
LMH : I think I do various things: do exercise, or watch TV programs or movies to give impetus to me, or a special program about a person to help me empower my life. When I'm spurred by watching them, I feel somewhat energized.

It could happen that a person sometimes feels bored and uninterested while working. In that case, I watch such movies, which make me think, " Oh, I should not slack in my work. I should work harder". That helps me motivate myself.

Q : If you have any life mottos or philosophes from Korean proverbs ...
LMH : "Winners never quit, and quitters never win!"
When I was in my childhood, my parents gifted me a flat spoon-shaped wall-souvenir from their wedding anniversary trip. This motto was written on it. I was very touched by the words even though I was a kid. Up till now, that has been my personal motto.

Q : Which book would you recommend us, and would give us the reason why?
LMH : Lee Oi Soo's essay, Ha-Ahk-Ha-Ahk (Korean book).
Even young kids can understand it easily. It presents many useful ideas expressed in a simple and fun way. That's why I recommend the book.

Worthy of the name, Kainozoic era star,(the new generation star),has been upgraded to” blue chip” for the advertising industry. Both Kim Bum and Kim So Eun are highly popular. However, in fact, both of them prefer to be a great actor/actress rather than a “star” with popularity. You can see that Kim bum has worries, but he is not nervous, has star qualities. Although you may not know him, you still can’t stop his luster.
Kim So Eun has a pair of beautiful eyes. She is such a clever actress who knows what she wants, no matter what, she will try her best to get into that.
These two people have fresh and sunny temperament and today, they meet at print ads.

Q:What are you doing after ‘Boys Over flowers’?

Kim Bum: I am busy at filming the CFs, my next project is ‘Bi Sang’. I am working on role analysis and preparation at the moment.

Kim So Eun: I also decided my next project which is a mini drama, will start to film recently. At the same time, I am filming a movie as well; don’t have time to have a rest.

Q:How has your lives changed after becoming so popular?

Kim Bum: I personally feel that in ‘Boys over flowers’, we were not actually acting, it was still just a ‘vase’ (for you non-Asian, it means people who are only good looking but no acting skills) However, I like So Yi Jung which has given me so much popularity, but I am also afraid of whether I can bear the bad comments or not. I am worried if I am acting as another role, people still have the illusion that I am So Yi Jung. So I am particularly concerned about my next project. (Kathy, the translat0r: hey man! Thats what I want to say, I always thought you were Yijung, oh gosh, Hav you guys seen the new pics of Kim Bum in dream??!!the hair style………………..)

Kim So Eun: First of all, I would like to thank you for supporting me. Because my supporters suddenly become so many, I know I need to work harder. Therefore, I will try my best to show the best side of me!

Q:What is the most interesting thing during working?

Kim Bum: When people are happy and touching through my acting, I will feel satisfied. Then I realized that I can give people hope and happiness through my acting, this is the most meaningful thing. (Kathy, the translator: what??? I think they were asking the most interesting thing, why did you answer the most meaningful thing??? Do they have the same meaning in Korean? Well, I don’t know, you guys find out yourselves. Lol…)

Kim So Eun: I found the most interesting thing was a lot of people looking at us on the set. I felt very stressful in the full view of people, but also, I am very happy. As an actress, if we can enjoy this kind of attention, I think that is a good thing.

Q:How do you get into a new role?

Kim Bum: I will work hard to get into a role, thinking of the environment about the role, try to make an assumption, such as” try to become that person.”

Kim So Eun: I will analysis the script many times. I am the kind of person who is based on the script and try to get closer to the role. I will also do some research and think about the role’s behavior.

Q:In that case, choose a role which is difficult to play but meaningful.

Kim Bum: Young Dong Chul in ‘east of Eden’. The historical background is in 1960s, Tan Goang village. It is a very sad role, he saw his father’s death which I haven’t got experience in this generation. It is very difficult to play such a role, I felt very stressful but at the same time, it is a very great drama. People all have good comments about the role. As an actor, it is very cheerful.

Kim So Eun: ‘Empress Chun Chu’ is very special to me. I stopped performing when I was in senior2. I had a big break to work on my study in Senior3 in order to get into university. During that break, I was studying, but I wanted to perform. After that, I know I have the passion to be an actress. Therefore, when I got into university, I had the chance to play young Huang Bo Soo in ‘Empress Chun Chu’. I think I learn how to act from the drama and enrich my acting skills.

Q:As a famous new star, it seems you are still afraid of something?

Kim Bum: Actors often change their roles. I am afraid that people cannot accept my new roles. I think that is the difference between what people like the style of a project.

Kim So Eun: I feel that happiness seems more than tiredness. No matter who, if you are doing something you like, you definitely have to pay for it. I am not afraid of being tired. I have strong desire to do things that I want.(Kathy, the translator: ummm.. I suppose she means she is eager to do her favourite things?) Everyone want to have their ideal lives which wont happen the same as your wishes, but you still have to live. And now I can do what I want, I feel happy and I am really a lucky girl.

Q:Is there any role you want to challenge or any actor you admired?

Kim Bum:I like Al Pasino,he seems have the ability to express the feelings of human beings perfectly. As a role who is the belial contacted with an capable lawyer in the movie , I am impressed by how he expressed the dual personality. I personally like villain very much, so i am thinking maybe I can play a role who has dual personality.

Kim So Eun: Ha Ji Won is my example, not only because she is good looking, but also she is confirmed by public with her great acting. I’m eager to be an actress who has the ability to play a diversificate role. My goal is to become an established actress like Naomi Watts in ‘The Painted Veil ‘, that role requests both good acting and the accumulation of life experience.

Q:Do u have any other hobbies apart from acting?

Kim Bum: I like sports, I was a member of a football team at school, and I learned kendo. (Kathy, the translator: I remember that Soeun learned Kendo as well when she was filming Empress Chun Chu. lol…What can I say then??lol….)And I like reading very much, also I enjoy playing games and watching movies.

Kim So Eun:I like reading as well. I think i am those persons who are reading regularly and I like writing diaries.
Dramas limit my imagination, books can help me extend my thought, so i like it very much. Also I like running(lol), horse riding, skating and any other exciting sports. Moreover, I like taking photos, i want to have an office with cafe if i have chance. I hope that if i reach my goal, i will start to learn design which i am interested since I was young.

Q: You two are attending Joongang University in the same Theater and Movie major, and had a lot of interactions in dramas and CFs. What do you think of one another?

Kim Bum: I’ve known Soeun for about a year, and whenever I see her at school or on the set, she is always bright, greeting others with a smile, which can give other people energy. Because of this, she was able to portray her charisma in her roles.

Kim So Eun: He is a really hard working friend. I am also the type who hates losing, and Bummie is very strict on himself and seems to tries his best and not rest. This is an image of a very fine actor. (Kathy, the translator: I think Soeun said beautiful actor?? But well, I agree with Heroine.Mei, I suppose she means great actor. This question belongs to Heroine.Mei, I wont be bothered to translate again.)

Q:As an actor/actress, what is your future plan?

Kim Bum: As the acting way is very long, I think it is just a start now. Like marathon, it has total length of 42.194km.I have run less than five kilometers. You can hear the cheering in many places, but you have to continue to run on your own. To use some power to adapt other competitors or supporters, and finally the most important thing is I myself never shake my will. Therefore, I don’t think I will be super happy because of the popularity. I think it is just a start and I have many roles which I haven’t played before. All the things should be the same as I first did it!

Kim So Eun: No matter actor/actress or stars are all good, I can say that I would like to have the way which is known as an actress. If I can be called as an actress, the popularity may not last very long, but that doesn’t matter. However, be famous of my acting, I prefer the added value which is accompanied by acting. I think I will use my original passion and feelings to perform and do my best.

KBS 2TV 월화 드라마 <꽃보다 남자>(극본 윤지련ㆍ연출 전기상)의 촬영장에는 언제나 팬들로 넘쳐난다. 최근 경기도 일산의 한 카페에서 '금잔디' 구혜선을 만나던 날에도 팬들의 함성은 끊이지 않았다. 중ㆍ고등학생 팬들은 "언니 너무 예뻐요!"를 연발하며 카페 창 밖에 줄을 섰다.

구혜선은 "항상 감사하죠. (손을 들어 보이며)저 분들 덕에 <꽃보다 남자>가 잘되고 있는 거 같아요"라며 밝게 웃어 보였다. 구혜선은 인터뷰 도중 느닷없이 종이를 들이밀며 사인을 요구한 중년의 남성에게도 "감사합니다"며 눈웃음을 지었다. 일주일 밤샘 촬영에도 구혜선을 웃게 만드는 그 힘은 무엇일까?
Goo Hye Sun: I am always thankful to all the fans. Because of those fans, BOF is doing so well. Even during the interview, she thankfully signed for a middle aged male fan. So, where does GHS gets her energy to tolerate multiple sleepless nights?

구 혜선은 <꽃보다 남자>에 금잔디로 캐스팅 된 후 궁합부터 봤다. 그 궁합의 대상은 바로 'F4' 이민호 김현중 김범 김준이다. 구혜선은 친구들과 함께 네 사람과의 궁합을 보고 더욱 흡족했다. 네 명과의 궁합도가 모두 좋았기 때문이다. Right after GHS was confirmed for the role of Geum Jandi, she went to have her read by a fortuneteller. (Goonghap, as told by a fortuneteller, predicts how harmonious the relationship will be between the couple.) GHS wanted to know how harmonious she will be with her cowokers (subjects of her goonghap are Lee Min Ho, Kim Hyun Joong, Kim Bum, and Kim Joon.). She went to the Goonghap with her friends and received reports of very good levels of harmony with all her four coworkers to be.

"궁합을 봐주신 분이 네 명과의 궁합이 좋아서 잘 안될 수가 없다고 하셨어요. 내심 '드라마가 잘 될까?'를 걱정했었는데 그 말을 듣고 모두 털어버렸죠. 지금 생각하면 그 분이 잘 봐주시는 거 같아요. 제가 몇 번 소문을 냈는데 그 집이 요새 '대박'이 났다네요. 하하"

Due to the never ending, strenuous, day and night filming of BOF, GHS is often in a state of half sleep-and half-awake. However, at the work site, she feels energized by F4. During the filming, she falls down a lot even on top of snow and gets dumped on by sacks of flour.

구혜선은 얼마전 전북 무주의 스키장 촬영을 다녀왔다. 또한 극중 친구로 출연하는 신예 김소은과 네일아트를 받기 위해 숍을 찾았다. 구혜선은 생전 처음으로 스키장에서 스키도 타보고, 손톱 손질도 받아봤다고 자랑했다.

Actors may skip their meals or just eat a roll of kimbap (Korean style sea weed roll) under the stress of filming. I may do that too. Occasionally Minho would buy me delicious food and I would get a burst of energy. F4 must feel rally sorry for me because I have to fall and get hurt a lot. So, they often treat me to dinners. LMH: At first, I didn't laugh out loud or anything like that. Second time, I think I showed them more of my real self and also more of the brighter side too.

Q: Do you think the perm made you more appealing?
LMH: I think it was influential. After I got the perm done, the director and other people told me that the look went well with me.

Q: It's been known that you have many friends?
LMH: I like hanging around with people. I like playing around. I have a few close friends.

Q: Do you like taking photos?
LMH: I like taking photos on my own and taking them with my close friends.

Q: What is the background on your mobile?
LMH: Its just a mickey mouse picture. No special name. Maybe a bit wicked mickey mouse. I made it my background because I like the slight double image.

Q: Who is your shortcut key #1?
LMH: I didn't have that done.

Q: You're well-intentioned competitors with Jung Il-woo?
LMH: Luckily, the dramas were aired on different days so there weren't any direct competition. I was a bit worried at first. LMH: All of us are competitive but Jun always wins after saying that he doesn't know how to.

LMH: She's another kid sister that I've started my debut project with... I've completed 3 projects with her and she's like a sister that I adore.

MH: That would be the shoes that I bought recently.

Q: What is the thing that recently bought you regret most?
MH: It's the mp3 I bought. The mp3 was broken down in a week.
It's troublesome to take it for repair so I just leave it there. I'm a bit regretful about that.

KJ: Banana...I bought a lot as I feel like eating bananas.
But they are perishable and end up I throw away more than i have eaten.

MH: About my car.
One time I drove and the car broke down in the middle of the road suddenly.

MH: I usually sing ballad. Since I have released an album, recently I sing a lot my own songs.

MH: No, I can't. Singing live is a bit... I need a microphone with high level of echo.

MH: I use the song from OST of Howl's "Moving Castle", a Japanese animation movie.

KJ: I use the most typlical/traditional ringtone.

Q: What is the NG king among Koo Hyesun and the other F3?
What situation makes you NG most?
MH: No one in particular got NG most.
Most of NG situation was that when everyone burst into laughter.

(I would say I love all the funny NGs between Jun Pyo and Jan Di. I thinks the kissing scenes have a lot of NGs.)

KJ: Exactly.

(I can't remember any NG from Woo Bin except for the F4 NG in the Jeju island scene when they were being blown away by the strong winds.)

Q: What do you want to do if you become a girl for one day?
MH: Shopping. I'm interested in fashion and I want to see how good is my mix & match
technique.

KJ: There are a lot of female-only areas/ places that I want to go and take a look at.

Q: If you are a girl, who will you choose as a date among F4 and why?
MH: As Kim Jun is sitting next to me laughing, I would choose Kim Jun as first preference
but I don't think it would last for long. Next I would choose Kim Hyun Joong and then

Kim Bum : 10asia Interview

10asia released many mesmerizing pictures of Kim Bum, along with a long interview.

Q: Your recognition started to go up after 'East of Eden' and 'Boys Over Flowers'. Do you feel like there is anything different now?

Honestly, I've been so absorbed in my dramas that I haven't noticed, but I'm thankful for the love and support from our Japanese and other Asian fans for the 'Boys Over Flowers' drama. Our Korean fans are also very active, and they are another source of support for me as well. I learned a lot of things from working with the senior actors in 'East of Eden', and even now, I would call Kim Jin Man director or the filming director if I have a question about acting. Also, I have grown close to my F4 hyungs and Goo Hye Sun from 'Boys Over Flowers', and we met up a while back on my birthday, as luckily my film shoot for the day had ended early. It was a pity that (Kim) Joonie hyung couldn't make it though, because he had activities in Japan.

Q: You must have received quite a few casting offers after 'Boys Over Flowers'. Why did you decide on 'Dream'?

Actually, between 'Boys Over Flowers' and 'Dream', I finished filming for another movie 'Flight', which should open in cinemas at around Chuseok (Thanksgiving). 'Dream' is my first appearance after 'Boys Over Flowers' and I was worried whether I could continue to show a good image to the audience and whether it might be too fast for a new drama. I decided on 'Dream' after much deliberation, and even though the preparation period was short, I did my best to concentrate and prepare for this drama. First of all, I was drawn to the never-before-seen story of a sports athlete, his agent, and their world. I think 'Dream' is not just a drama about martial arts, but more a story of how someone grows and matures emotionally through the events and the warm people he meets.

Q: What kind of character is Lee Jang Seok?

He has the temperament of a fighter, but in reality he's actually quite tenderhearted and lonely. Growing up in a bad family environment, his pickpocket father made him drop out of middle school, so that he could teach him pickpocketing skills. Eventually, he ends up in a youth correctional facility when he takes the blame for his father. As a result, Lee Jang Seok has a complex about his father. He's disappointed with his father, but at the same time he secretly hopes for some fatherly love. To protect himself, he works hard at putting on a tough/strong facade, which is kind of similar to the So Yi Jeong character in 'Boys Over Flowers'. Personally from an actor's point of view, I pity and respect both these characters.

Q: But on the surface, it looks like Lee Jang Seok and So Yi Jeong are 180 degrees different. (Laughs)

To be honest, initially I was worried that my fans who liked the So Yi Jeong character would be shocked by my new role. But now that I'm immersed in the Lee Jang Seok character, I think only about how I can best express this person. Actors do not show just one image of themselves, but are constantly looking to change and evolve. I hope viewers can throw away their fantasies about So Yi Jeong, and look at me as Kim Bum the actor. I can't live forever as So Yi Jeong, but still I hope to have left viewers a good memory of him.

Q: How did F4 react to your new character change in 'Dream'?

Truthfully, I didn't notice it, but when we met on my birthday, they said that I seem to have become colder since 'Boys Over Flowers'. I guess its somewhat good that I'm that immersed in my character. Still, to hear them say that I've become colder... (laughs)

Q: From a pickpocket to nightclub waiter to martial arts fighter - this seems to have been an interesting process of transformation.

Jang Seok takes the rap for his pickpocket father and goes to a youth correctional facility. When he is released, he tries to look for a job, but his prior record makes it difficult for him to find one. Eventually he finds work as a night club waiter. Later as the result of a fighting incident, he gets involved with sports agent Na Je Il (Joo Jin Mo), which leads to Jang Seok's debut as a martial arts fighter.

Q: What did you do to prepare for your role as a mixed martial arts athlete?

I haven't been able to practice much these days because of my filming activities. But in the period before production started, I prepared by learning some basic techniques from actual martial arts fighters. I think no matter how much I practise, its going to be very different when it comes to actual filming, so I guess I'll adapt to the situation as required. I haven't actually filmed a fight match scene yet.

Q: What is the atmosphere like on set?

We are going to film in Ilsan until late at night today, following which we'll leave for the airport and fly off early morning tomorrow for another Dream press conference in Japan. A tight schedule like this can be very tiring, but Oh Dal Su sunbae's adlibs always makes the atmosphere on set enjoyable. There was a scene where I was supposed to stay still with my eyes closed, but even though I was just listening to Oh Dal Su sunbae's adlibs, I couldn't resist laughing and NGed.

Q: You have appeared in a variety of projects since your debut. What do you think was the turning point for you?

It was 'East of Eden', where I appeared from the 2nd to the 5th episode. Even though I only appeared in 4 episodes, it took half a year to film. Time went by really quickly, but I lived immersed in the Lee Dong Chul character for 7 months, and there was a big difference from my debut in the 2nd episode to my last appearance in the 5th episode. This left a great impression on me. Especially during the final shoot, I was so into the Lee Dong Chul character that I was worried about how I would be able to choose my next character. Even now, I still have a lot of love for Lee Dong Chul, and because I was able to act with excellent senior actors, I learned a lot (about acting).

Q: Even though you didn’t appear a lot in 'East of Eden', it left you with a lasting impression. You shed the cute image from before and played a tense character. From your rookie days it seems you have worked really intensely and hard at whatever you do.

But while I'm working, I really enjoy it. Do I look very tense? (laughs)

Q: Where does your strength come from?

I’m the type of person who hates losing. Nothing can compare to my family, fans, staff etc, who believe in me and give me support. When I see their eyes or presence I will never be careless with anything.

Q: From the time you joined the entertainment industry and started acting when you were younger... I'm sure there must have been times when you felt stressed or lost (about your acting career). Are you one to worry much?

I don’t have time to be lost (laughs). I also don’t think about being uncertain (about my acting career). I admit that I have wished I could travel like my friends and enjoy school life, but since I have chosen the path of an actor, I can only give up my desire for such freedom. Still, I don't regret it at all.

Q: Then what do you worry about usually?

I worry about my projects the most. Too boring? (laughs) Especially for 'Dream'. I was the last actor to join the cast for training, so compared to the others I had shorter time to train, and I had to worry about how to maximize training in the shortest amount of time. Therefore lately I’ve been worried about how I can quickly shed the images of my previous characters and take on that of Lee Jang Seok.

Q: Last year you were admitted into Chung-Ang University in the Theater and Movie department. Is it possible to balance your acting life and student life?

Having these two lifestyles at once is very tiring, which is why I am taking this semester off.

Q: What dreams do you want to accomplish with 'Dream'?

An actor’s manager and stylist work in places and situations we cannot see, just like the relationship between an athlete and his sports agent. I hope that we will be able to truly show the obstacles and life of these characters, and that 'Dream' can be a warm drama that will bring hope and dreams to our viewers. Also, I have yet to receive any awards, and I do not hope to receive an individual award, but wish that we would be able to receive one for the drama 'Dream'.

Q: Until now you have been developing steadily as an actor. Is there any other occupation you would like to try in the future?

If there is a chance, I would like to try my hand at directing. More than just putting in practice what I have learned as an actor, I want to work hard and seriously to prepare, whether it's an independent movie or a commercial movie or a theatrical play, I would like to try directing. Because my friends are also in the Theater and Movie department, it would be nice to be able to work together with my seniors and juniors.
